Envisij helps PowaTrim
Cut Energy Use and Emissions

With help from Envisij, PowaTrim tackled high energy costs and voltage issues at a major industrial site. The result? Lower bills, fewer emissions, and longer-lasting equipment. 

PROJECT CHALLENGE:

The site, powered by a single local transformer, needed a precise and real-time monitoring solution to track three-phase and single-phase voltage, Power Factor, and kW consumption. Their engineering offices, located 200 miles away, required remote access to this data, as well as historical insights to assess performance trends. Additionally, any energy efficiency measures implemented needed to be verifiable for financial and facilities teams to justify future investments.

BACKGROUND

PowaTrim Ltd provides power quality products and services to industrial and commercial site operators helping them enhance energy efficiency and reduce consumption.

One of their clients – a large industrial campus – was facing frequent motor burnouts, suspected to be
caused by excessively high, fluctuating voltage from their 11kV to 400V transformer.

PowaTrim Ltd partnered with Envisij to implement a state-of-the-art energy monitoring solution, allowing real-time access to critical power data.

Key actions included:

• Installing energy monitoring points at the site’s main incoming supply to deliver real-time data via the cloud.

• Automating daily file transfer protocol (FTP) transfers of half-hourly data from the site’s meter to Envisij for savings verification.

• Deploying Envisij’s Energy Analytics dashboard to visualise both half-hourly meter data (used for billing) and real-time power supply metrics (voltage, power factor and kWh/kW).

• Sharing these insights with the site’s facilities team through a user-friendly dashboard.

Envisij’s analytics revealed that the three-phase voltage was averaging 430V - well above the optimal 400V. This discovery led to action: PowaTrim Ltd coordinated with the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to implement a transformer tap-down reduction.

The transformer adjustment was carried out over a weekend, with significant benefits observed immediately:

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings:
A 7% voltage reduction led to a 4% drop in energy consumption, translating to annual savings of 40,100 kWh and £10,400.

Equipment Longevity and
Operational Gains:

The lower voltage extended the lifespan of critical electrical motors, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.

The site’s facilities team was particularly impressed with this low-cost, high-impact efficiency measure. They have since committed to using Envisij’s platform to track and validate four additional energy efficiency projects per year, helping them achieve a 30% reduction in energy use over three years.
